(1) Postdoc Positions: Theoretical/Computational Biophysics, SUNY Buffalo
From: Yaoqi Zhou <zhou@tammy.harvard.edu>
Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 17:12:24 -0500 (EST)
Postdoctoral positions are available after July 1, 2000 at Center for
Single Molecular Biophysics of Department of Physiology and Biophysics
of SUNY Buffalo to conduct theoretical and computational research in
biophysics. Qualified candidates should have a PhD in Chemistry,
Physics, or related field.
Experience with theoretical/computational biophysics, statistical
mechanics, and/or computer simulations is a plus but not necessary.
However, strong mathematical and some programming skills are essential.
The main area of our interest is protein folding and protein binding
using statistical mechanics theories and simulation methods (please
visit http://yuri.harvard.edu/~zhou for details). Our laboratory will
be equipped with 64-processor PC clusters and some SGI/Dec alpha
workstations. The university Center for Computational Research also
has 128-processor Origin 2000, 28-processor SP2, and a cluster of 64
Sun Ultra 5 workstations.
Please send your CV with cover letter, and the names, addresses, and
phone numbers of two referees familiar with your work. Email to
zhou@tammy.harvard.edu with plain text file or postscript file is
preferred. Regular mail should send to Dr. Yaoqi Zhou, Department of
Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University, 12 Oxford St. #232,
Cambridge, MA 02138, or Department of Physiology and Biophysics, 124
Sherman Hall, University at Buffalo, State University of New York
Buffalo, New York 14214 after July 1, 2000.

From: Jian Feng <fengji@rockvax.rockefeller.edu>
Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 15:11:58 -0500
A postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Physiology
and Biophysics, State University of New York at Buffalo. Successful
candidate will be trained to develop mouse knockout models to study
neurodegenerative disorders. Qualification of this position includes
extensive research experience in molecular biology, cell biology and/or
neuroscience. Ideal candidates are expected to have a subset of the
following technical expertise: molecular cloning, mammalian cell
culture, gene expression, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in
situ hybridization, primary neuronal culture. Previous experience in
transgenic animals and/or apoptosis is highly desirable.

(1) Book on the Rape of Nanking Pubished by University of Michigan Press
From: Jessica Sysak <sysak@umich.edu>
Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2000 14:10:27 -0800
The University of Michigan Press has recently published a book, Documents
on the Rape of Nanking edited by Timothy Brook, Professor of Chinese
History and Associate Director of the Joint Centre for Asia Pacific
Studies, University of Toronto. We feel this book may be of interest to
the audience of your website.
The book covers the following: What ended in one atrocity began with
another: The savage military takeover of China's capital city, which
quickly became known as the Rape of Nanking. The Japanese Army's conduct
from December 1937 to February 1938 constitutes one of the most barbarous
events not just of the war but of the century. The violence was documented
at the time and then redocumented during the war crimes trial in Tokyo
after the war. This book brings together materials from both moments to
provide the first comprehensive dossier of primary sources on the Rape.
These contemporary records and judgments create an intimate firsthand
account of the Rape of Nanking. Together they are intended to stimulate
deeper reflection than previously possible on how and why we assess and
assign the burden of war guilt.

(2) "Voice My Horror with the Nanking Massacre"
From: "Carlson, Matthew" <carmat@dunwoody.tec.mn.us>
Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2000 11:19:04 -0600
I guess I just needed to voice my horror with the Nanking Massacre
events. I have recently read a book detailing the events and after
seeing the photos on your website, I am truly appalled. My grandfather
served with the US Army and was captured in the Phillipines on the
Bataan Peninsula in 1942, and although he did not suffer through the
death march, he did see atrocities in the prison camps. He didn't talk
about it much, but when he did, it was awful to hear.
Your site [http://www.cnd.org/njmassacre/ -Ed] and the associated links
have truly moved me, the Japanese during WWII were animals, their
conduct proved that. I hope in the future they can partly avenge their
wrongs by at least admitting to their crimes, if not, then they are
still the unthinking beasts they were during the war.
Sincerely,
-Matt-

operation was practiced for excision and by pathospy she was diagnosed
as lymphoid hyperplasia. A year after operation, another tumor was
found as above, the patient was practiced the operation again. The
patient was diagnosed as acidophil hyperplasia lymph granuloma. The
local radiotherapy was followed, then the symptom began to alleviate.
In 1989 the patient was found a tumor once again in the left side of
back of her noise, it became enlarged, the pathospy was as same as the
former. It was treated with prenisome, chroquine, and so on. The
symptom began to abate to some extent. A half year later, the
administration stopped, the pathological range of it became enlarged
again and have reached her face.
Now there is no way to treat it. Therefore we are looking for help for
the patient. In addition, the examination of the patient on blood,
X-ray in the chest and cardiogram are normal. Trympn subgroup: CD3 45%
60-80, CD4 27% 35-55, CD8 18% 20-30. ESR 2 mm/h; WBC class: bacillary

Petechia presented on both lower limbs, felt abdominal distension and
exhaustion for over one year, and entered into hospital on Oct.12.1999.
A year ago, the patient was hurt on the middle of shank and was
bleeding for a long time, then petechia appeared around the wound and
eniarged gradually. The diagnosis of the hospital was allergic
purpura. The half-month treatment was of no effect, and the patient
felt abdominal distension and exhaustion. The B-ultrasonic diagnosis
was crrhosis of liver and ascites, therefor, the patient transferred to
No.302 Hospital in Beijing. The doctor's diagnosis was innutritional
cerrhosis of liver. After treatment, the patient looked up and was out
of hospital. Because of splenomegaly, the patient entered in hospital
again. With the body check-up, the results were as ollows: K-F
circle(+), ceruloplasmin 69.600 mg/l (reference data, 180-450 mg/l),
serum copper 6.4 mmol/l (11.000-22.000mmol/l), CT, putamena (both
sides, low-density shade). The diagnosis worked out, Wilson's
Disease. With the penicillamine tablets 1.5g/d liver protection
treatment, the condition was improved. The examination showed: T:37C,
P:82/min, R:18/min, BP:20/13kPa. The patient was normal in growth and
spirit with normal heart/lung functions. The belly was upheaval, but
without tenderness or rebound tenderness. The liver was not polpable
under costal margin, and spleen was about 8cm under costal margin. The
spleen felt flexible and smooth without touching pain. The examination
of nerve system: cranial nerves(-), arms and legs, retractable, left
toe extension limited, nerves deep and shallow feels mormal, tendon
reflec- tion reflection(+), Babinski's sign(-).
