Suspect Confesses to Bombing of Shijiazhuan Single-Handedly
[CND, 03/29/01] JIN Ruchao, who was arrested for charge of the four
co-ordinated Shijiazhuan explosions, was reported to have confessed to
police how he acted alone to bomb the four dormitories of the No. 3
Cotton Mill in Shijiazhuang, the South China Morning Post reported
quoting the People's Daily.
The report said that Jin told police he started acquiring explosives
last May from an illegal makeshift explosive factory run by WANG
Yushun. Jin bought a dozen bags of explosives for 950 yuan and packed
into a dozen yellow bags marked "chicken feed." He bought fuses and
detonators from a miner at Luquan City last year and hid them under a
pipe in a suburb.
The day before the blast, Jin hired several vehicles and drivers to
transport the explosives. He slept for several hours in a heating pipe
at a power station in the city that night and then returned to the mill
to make final preparations for the blasts before dawn, the report
said.
The four buildings Jin blasted were home to his stepmother, ex-wife,
ex-parents-in-law, and neighbours. Jin's sister told police that Jin
had a long fascination with dynamite and learned how to make it himself
at home, according to the report.
Jin was arrested on March 23 near a reservoir in Beihai City, Guangxi.
An off-duty Beihai prison guard CHEN Xueqiu was awarded 50,000 yuan for
his information that led to Jin's arrest, the report said. The
explosive provider Wang Yushun and his business partner HAO Fengqin
were arrested earlier.
It is said that the government released Jin's confession details in an
attempt to quell public fears for social instability linked to high
lay-offs and rampant corruption. (Shiji SHEN)
