Mummy Found at Mountain Range in Tibet

LHASA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- A 1,000 year old female mummy was recently found in a mountain range at an elevation of 5,000 meters in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Archeologists believe she was a Tibetan Buddhist nazarite.

The mummy was found by villagers in Nyemo County in a cave sealed by huge stones. Seen in a picture taken by an expert, the mummy sat cross-legged with a height of 65 cm. Her musculature was air-dried with her both eyes and feet well preserved. Her body was wrapped in a cotton cloth.

It is a tradition for Tibetan Buddhists to hide in secrete mountain areas to practice Buddhism. They live on light food and fresh water. When they die, their bodies are left in the caves where they had stayed.

At present, there are more than 100 Buddhist nazarites on the northern bank of Lhasa River, one of the three centers where nazarites concentrate. Two or three nazarites share a cave where they eat a tiny amount of Zamba, made of roasted Qingke barley flour, drink fresh water and practice Buddhism.
