China to Strengthen Supervision of Internet BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- An official from the Ministry of Information Industry said Friday China will strengthen the supervision on Internet to ensure the healthy development of the industry. Zhao Meizhuang, deputy-director of the department of policy and regulation under the ministry, said during a seminar that closed on Friday that the country is now promulgating law on telecommunications, which deals with Internet content, especially Internet security. The 33rd World Telecommunication Day was on May 17. This year's theme is "Internet: Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects." He also said time is not mature for working out law on e- commerce. "But we are doing research and preparatory jobs on subjects such as security and certifications." Zhao also called on international cooperation in the supervision of the Internet and joining efforts to clamp down on Internet crimes. China has listed the development of Internet highly on its agenda for the next five years and plans to bring 200 million people to the Internet from the current 22.5 million. Zhao also called for self-discipline from Internet companies. The China Internet Association is expected to be set up in the later days of this month, he said.
