US to Use Internet in Information War with China

[CND, 09/01/01] The US government is planning to set up an information program to target on Internet users in China, the Hong Kong iMail reported, quoting Thursday's New York Times.

The US International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) and a California-based company Safeweb are to team up for the program intended to distribute information to China via internet beyond the Chinese government's blockage. IBB is the parent agency of Voice of America, and Safeweb is partially funded by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Safeweb owns about 100 privacy server computers in a worldwide network. The private servers are capable of disguising websites, to which the access is blocked in China. IBB and Safeweb are in discussion of IBB's paying for new computers to run Safeweb software specially designed for Chinese users and covering network bandwidth for the Internet traffic.

Internet service providers in China are required to electronically filter contents considered pornographic, anti-government, violent, unhealthy or superstitious. Many web sites, including the Washington Post, Amnesty International and some containing Falun Gong material, have been blocked by the government. (LIU Weijun)
