Authorities Shut Down 17,000 Internet Bars
[CND, 11/22/01] Chinese authorities shut down over 17,000 of the 94000
Internet bars for failing to block officially unwanted web sites,
including subversive and pornographic sites, according to the
Shanghai-based newspaper Wenhui Bao, AP reported on Wednesday.
In addition, authorities ordered 28,000 Internet bars to install
monitoring software to their workstations, said the report. The
software was mandatory under new regulations issued last year.
The campaign to clean up Internet bars in China was launched in April.
About 4.5 million Chinese Internet users rely on Internet bars to
access the Internet. The bars, mostly operated in dimly lit one-room
shops, can be found almost everywhere in mainland China.
"Some youths will submerge themselves in Internet bars for long
periods, playing unhealthy games and adversely affecting their
development as normal students," the newspaper said. (Dong LIU)
